Gospel:  What is involved in obeying the gospel?

There are five things involved in obeying the gospel that a person must submit to. He first must hear what the gospel says.   Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”. Hebrews 11:6 says, “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is”. So one must hear the gospel (the word of God) in order to produce faith.

Secondly, one must believe what the gospel says. John 8:24 “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins”. We notice in this verse that believing that Jesus is the Son of God is something man has to do.

Thirdly, one must repent. Luke 13:5  “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish”. Again this is something man has to do.

Fourthly, one must confess.  Luke 12:8 “Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God”. This again is something man has to do.

Fifthly, man must be baptized.  Acts 22:16 “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord”. We see then that man has to be obedient to the command to be baptized.

When a person obeys these commands from the gospel, his sins are forgiven and the Lord adds him to the church, Acts 2:38 & 47. All these things are involved in obeying the gospel. When one obeys these, God extends his grace and mercy upon him.  Man hasn’t earned his salvation by his obedience to the gospel, but becomes a benefactor of God’s mercy and grace. Remember, “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” Hebrews 5:9. Jesus saves those who obey these commands.
