In Matt. 4:4, Jesus said, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Jesus also said in Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned." Many today preach and teach "bread alone" salvation when they say, all one has to do for salvation is only believe, or stated another way, saved by faith only. But more words than "just to believe" came from the mouth of Jesus in this statement. The command to be baptized for salvation also came from his mouth. In order to "live", or to have spiritual life, according to Matt. 4:4, one must submit to all that Jesus has commanded. In Mark 16:16, Jesus says, it's the person who "believes and is baptized" that will live eternally or be "saved".
James 1:21 says in the last part of that verse, "receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls." One might ask, how do you receive the word which is able to save your soul? James answers that in verse 22, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves". So when we are doers of the word, (that is obedient to it), then it is at that time, that James is saying the word will save your souls. Also listen to what Jesus said in Luke 6:46, "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" Now, why would anyone reason in their heart that Jesus is their Lord, if they do not the things which he tells them to do? Why try to be saved on "bread alone" salvation? It will not work.
Again listen to James in Chapter 2:17 , "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone". James also says in verse 19, that the devils have this kind of faith, and yet they tremble. They tremble because faith without works is dead. Also, when man tries to be saved on "bread alone" salvation or faith only, he is really demonstrating a lack of love for Jesus. In John 14:15 Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments". Therefore, if we love Jesus, we will keep his commandments "by faith which worketh by love", Gal. 5:6.
Are you a Christian? If not, you can be, by obeying the gospel, which is the "power of God unto salvation", Rom.1:16. The gospel is all of the words that have come from the mouth of Jesus, and Jesus is very clear concerning what one must do in order to be saved.
First, one must hear ..... James 1:21 - - - because it is that "engrafted word" which is able to save our soul.
Second, one must believe ..... John 8:24 - - "for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins."
Third, one must repent ..... Luke 13:5 - - "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish".
Fourth, one must confess ..... Matt. 10:32 - - "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before me, him will I confess
before my Father which is in heaven".
Fifth, one must be baptized ..... Acts 22:16 - - "And now why tarriest thou? arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins".
These things just mentioned are the words that have come from Jesus mouth concerning our souls salvation. Anything less than this, would be trying to be saved by "bread alone" salvation, by which - - no one will be saved. If we obey these words of Jesus and then live a faithful Christian life, we will have been saved by the grace of God. Only when we obey him, are we benefactors of his grace.
