The word of God answers this most important question in
general terms and in specific terms. This article will consider some of the
One general term is found in Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven”. We see in this verse that it is the person who does God’s will. But the conditions of that will are not made known in this verse.
Another general term is found in Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”. How one calls upon the name of the Lord is not stated here.
One more general term is found in Hebrews 5:9 “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him”. We are not given any instructions regarding what and how to obey him in this passage.
So to answer this question from a general standpoint, it is one who does the Father’s will, calls upon the name of the Lord, and obeys Jesus.
Other general terms concerning those who will go to heaven are found in:
Titus 3:5 “but according to his mercy he saved us”
Ephesians 2:5 “by grace ye are saved”
Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins”. Thus, man is saved according to God’s mercy, by grace, through the shedding of the blood of Jesus. Now let’s think about man for a moment. Does he have to do anything to be saved by God’s mercy or God’s grace? Is there anything he must do in order to be saved by the blood of Christ? In other words, is there anything man must do in order to go to heaven? To answer this question, consider II Thessalonians 1:7-9 “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power”. We see in these verses that man must obey the gospel or be punished with everlasting destruction.
